Overview - TAP and Small Firm Groups

The Accountants Peer Groups (“TAP” Groups) were founded by Thea Foster. In late 2017 Thea is transferring the running of these groups to Rob Pillans as part of her transition to retirement, after carefully considering who would be the right person. New and existing TAP Groups with Rob at the helm will continue Thea’s legacy as an expert facilitator and supporter of small to medium accounting and advisory firms.

Why?

Particularly in one or two owner (partner/director) firms it can be pretty lonely at the top as you juggle the multitude of demands that come from clients, team and others. Regardless of the size of your firm, the profession is rapidly changing and it can be hard to keep up.

What?

TAP Groups are special environments where key people responsible for the direction and management of accounting and advisory firms can discuss matters of common interest. The emphasis is on discussion of mutually agreed topics in an atmosphere of trust and support.

In some groups there is an annual benchmarking of certain aspects of firm operation to assist in continuous improvement and learning from each other.

Groups offer participants the opportunity to:
  • Ask questions and share ideas
  • Check what other firms are doing that is working well (or not)
  • Discuss issues of common concern
  • Tap into Rob’s in depth knowledge of firm management and the profession
  • Connect with firms with special expertise who may assist you in areas beyond your own expertise
  • Meet and hear guest speakers, including key industry suppliers, on a broad range of topics
  • Take away ideas to implement for the improvement of their firm

Five Types of TAP Groups

There are five types of groups we facilitate:
  • TAP - the original concept for partners/directors and practice managers/general managers in small to medium firms, typically 2 to 10 partners/directors
  • TAP Small Firm Group – For the leaders of one and two partner/director firms
  • TAP Audit – for audit partners/managers
  • TAP IT – for those responsible for IT in their firm
  • TAP SMSF – For SMSF specialists

Some firms have people attend multiple groups. Click on the links to see more details of each group type.

How

Rob Pillans prepares the agenda for each meeting based on feedback from the group’s members and his own sense of what will be of interest to, or important for, the group. In his work outside of facilitating the groups he is coaching and consulting to a broad range of firms and that will often prompt ideas for meeting content. Rob organises the venue and catering and any guest speakers and facilitates each meeting to ensure each attendee is able to take away ideas and actions for improvement in his or her firm.

Between meetings Rob facilitates the exchange of information and helps address any member questions which may arise. The groups are very collegial.

When

The timetable for meetings is organised to fit around the known busy periods in accounting and advisory firms and to avoid school and public holidays.

Groups meet between twice and four times per year. The exact timing is member driven.

Investment

Members pay a fixed fee every 3, 4 or 6 months depending on the group. There is no minimum term for membership of a TAP group but historically members have stayed many years.
